In the early hours of July 4, Russia launched a coordinated aerial attack against Kyiv, deploying more than 550 drones and missiles in one of the most extensive assaults of the war. The target was families. Apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, and transport systems were struck across multiple districts. It was deliberate, genocidal violence against a civilian population.
Just hours before the missiles fell, Donald Trump spoke directly with Vladimir Putin. The attack followed that conversation almost immediately. And while the skies over Kyiv were on fire, U.S. weapons which were already budgeted, already allocated, already staged for delivery, were withdrawn by America.
The decision to halt those transfers was not made because American defensive stockpiles were depleted because of support for Ukraine as the administration claims. These systems, including Patriot interceptors and HIMARS munitions, had already been pulled from U.S. inventories. They were no longer part of American defense readiness. There is no credible military justification for this action.. Once again the Trump administration lied..
The only explanation is that it is a deliberate political decision. And the consequences are deadly.
This administration has no understanding or commitment to allies, freedom or decency. The Trump administration does not prioritize U.S. security or stability. It makes deals, and aligns itself politically with, a regime that is actively committing genocide. The Trump administration’s choices directly benefit the Russian Federation at a time when Ukraine is being hit with the most intense air campaign since the start of the war. As this latest criminal attack on Ukraine happened immediately after the Trump/Putin chat, we all understand the calculation. The message to Moscow is simple: we will withhold weapons and you may proceed with the genocide. There will be no consequences.
What we are witnessing is the total collapse of moral clarity in American foreign policy. The country that once claimed to lead the free world is now openly supporting genocide. A nation that claims to stand for liberty and justice is withholding weapons from a democratic ally under siege. There is no strategic ambiguity here. There is only betrayal, though this isn’t the first time. From the Bay of Pigs to the abandoned Afghan translators and betrayed Kurdish fighters, the United States has a record of walking away when it matters most.
If the system of checks and balances still existed as was envisioned by the US Constitution, if the Congress and the Supreme Court were not compromised and controlled by Trump, a Russian asset, we would see urgent steps to counter the betrayal of America's purported principles. An uncompromised Congress would demand that all military aid that has already been approved, allocated, and staged for Ukraine be immediately released. It would conduct public and detailed hearings about every delayed shipment and hold those responsible accountable. And it would stop with the banal thoughts and prayers and reaffirm, through action not rhetoric, that the United States will not support or protect regimes that commit mass atrocities. Unfortunately, there is no moral backbone in the US Congress.
The irony is that this betrayal of American principles is happening at a time when patriotic Americans are observing the founding of their independence and looking forward to its 250th anniversary. The founding fathers would never understand. Trump is precisely what the American Revolution was about. And as for those who supported Trump or worse yet, continue to do so, the body count is on you.
